7th International NIR Workshop

Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an indispensable tool in modern medicine but some new advances have not yet made it into hospitals because of unresolved safety issues. EMRP project Metrology for next-generation safety standards and equipment in MRI (HLT06 MRI Safety) aims to improve MRI risk assessments and provide more complete and robust safety data for patients and medical staff.

JRP HLT06 and first results of WP3 of the project were presented and discussed at the 7th International NIR Workshop, 9-11 May 2012, Edinburgh. The workshop is particularly important for the JRP as it is organised by the International Committee of Non-Ionizing Radiation Protection (ICNIRP) which is a prime target group. The NIR workshop was attended by over 180 delegates from 40 countries worldwide and included experts from all relevant scientific disciplines (i.e. physics & engineering, biology and epidemiology), who presented the most recent advances of research and protection in the different areas of NIR, including electromagnetic fields and optical radiation.
