Millions of tonnes of scrap steel are produced each year, which could potentially be contaminated by radioactive sources. EMRP project Ionising radiation metrology for the metallurgical industry (IND04 MetroMetal) will produce new reference materials, methods and devices to improve the detection of radioactivity in scrap loads, cast steel, slags and fume dusts - reducing human health risks, trade disputes and environmental exposure across Europe.
IND04 JRP-Partners will present the project at CAFMET 2014, the 5th international conference of metrology organised by the African Committee of Metrology in Pretoria, South Africa. The conference is an opportunity to meet metrology labs from Africa as well as potential stakeholders. The presentation will highlight the main project achievements emphasising the development of reference sources suited to the metal industry as well as the inter-laboratory comparisons used to certify the materials.
