Exploring current and future scenarios within energy gas industries that may create new measurement challenges
Hosted by the National Physical Laboratory on behalf of the European Metrology Network (EMN) for Energy Gases
Driven by EU legislation on renewable energy (2009/28/EC) and by the ratification of the Paris agreement, which aims at a zero-carbon economy, renewable energy gas sources are gradually entering the market. The EMN for Energy Gases, with a broader remit than traditional metrology, aims to become the central nucleus to cover all of the metrological needs raised by the diversification of energy sources and thereby to facilitate the energy transition with respect to quality, efficiency, safety and trade aspects. This workshop will support the EMN in its initial tasks, thus providing the basis for a harmonised and sustainable European measurement infrastructure to catalyse the energy transition.
Energy gases stakeholders have established national and European platforms to address the fundamental challenges caused by the diversification of energy sources and by the fluctuations in renewable energy supply and demand. However, the robustness of the measurements performed in these areas is often compromised by a lack of traceable standards and by the absence of appropriate quality control, standardisation and procedures. Addressing these needs and bridging the gap between the metrology and end user communities will help facilitate the energy transition and ensure the effective use of energy gases across Europe.
This 1-day workshop invites European experts from industry, academia, government, and from across the measurement community to discuss and prioritise the technical challenges presented by current and future energy gases, and the role that measurement could play in addressing them. Attendees will have the opportunity to input into the Strategic Research Agenda of the EMN, which will be used to form the basis of a harmonised and sustainable European measurement infrastructure, as well as to provide insight into future challenges or opportunities they foresee for energy gases.
