The 6th International Conference for Radionuclide Metrology Low-Level-Radioactivity Measurement Techniques (ICRM-LLRMT ’12) was organised by the Low Level Measurement Techniques Working Group of the International Committee for Radionuclide Metrology. The measurement of low levels of radioactivity in a wide variety of matrices has been of interest to the scientific community since the beginning of the ‘nuclear age’ and techniques have always been developed to enable the detection of ever lower amounts of radioactivity in smaller samples and for many new applications. The ICRM-LLRMT ’12 conference will look at the latest developments in this area.
At the conference, EMRP project Metrology for radioactive waste management (ENV09 MetroRWM) presented the aims of the project and its results, specifically ‘Metrology for radioactive waste management: Clearance levels and acceptance criteria legislation, requirements and standards’ and ‘Measurement technique for free release measurement at nuclear facilities’. ENV09 will develop novel methods, standards, decay data, reference materials and instruments to improve radioactivity measurements in order to aid the successful decommissioning of nuclear power plants.
