Mathmet - PTB workshop on metrology for AI in medicine:
Brainstorming of project ideas for Metrology Partnership Health Call 2025 and building collaborations within EURAMET
Background
Many potential applications of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in healthcare qualify for the category of high-risk applications of AI according to the EU AI Act. Article 15.2 of the AI Act demands the required levels of accuracy and robustness to be measured and corresponding benchmarks and measurement methodologies to be developed. This calls for uniting forces of European National Metrology Institutes (NMIs) to address this challenge effectively.
The upcoming Call 2025 of the European Partnership on Metrology will have Health as one of its focus topics. This provides an excellent funding opportunity for addressing the metrology challenge with collaborative projects among NMIs, with the aim to build solid foundations for the ‘measurement’ of AI performance in medicine and potentially beyond.
Aims of the workshop
The workshop is jointly organised by the European Metrology Network for Mathematics and Statistics and PTB and aims to bring together NMIs and stakeholders from the healthcare area. It is intended as a forum to discuss potential research topics for the 2025 European Partnership on Metrology Health Call related to AI in healthcare and ideas for a potential framework for a long-term collaboration of European NMIs in this area.
The first day will be mainly devoted to short presentations and brainstorming on AI-related project ideas. The second day will continue this theme and, in addition, explore potential routes for a long-term collaboration of NMIs and interested stakeholders to build and develop a metrological basis for AI performance assessment.
The workshop will also encompass presentations from other relevant European Metrology Networks and earlier and ongoing European projects. The detailed workshop programme will be tailored according to the expressions of interest of registered participants.
