Training course: uncertainty evaluation methods in calibration and measurement

Online workshop 22 – 23 March 2021

The training course

The Institute of Metrology of Bosnia and Herzegovina (IMBiH) is to host a two-day training course on measurement uncertainty. The training course is targeted at staff at the NMIs and DIs across Europe. In the case of many registered participants, the preference will be given to NMIs and DIs from the Western Balkans countries. There will be special focus on selected examples from EMPIR project Advancing measurement uncertainty - comprehensive examples for key international standards  (17NRM05 EMUE). Concentration will be on the uncertainty evaluation methods appropriate in various disciplines and the manner in which the examples can be adapted to other applications. The relationship to relevant guides and standards will be emphasised.

The expertise level required by course participants is medium and the expected outcome is the gaining of knowledge of uncertainty evaluation methods appropriate to various metrology disciplines. The course will cover the traditional Guide to the expression of uncertainty in measurement (GUM) approach to uncertainty evaluation and Monte Carlo and Bayesian methods.

There will be parallel sessions on uncertainty evaluation for physical and chemical/medical quantities.  Examples developed within the EMUE project will be presented, explained step-by-step and followed by discussion sessions.

Sessions will also be concerned with conformity assessment and software for uncertainty evaluation. A final session will be devoted to presentation of examples by course delegates followed by discussion on ways in which the examples can be treated.

Course presenters will be from European metrology institutes IMBiH, INRIM, IPQ, LGC, LNE, NPL, PTB,  and VSL and the accreditation body UKAS.
