Knowledge exchange and exploring collaboration opportunities
Healthcare is one of the major European challenges and a strategic cornerstone in almost all EU R&D programmes. Accurate measurements and Metrology plays an important role in addressing health R&D challenges: as diagnostic and therapeutic methodologies continuously evolve, the related biological, chemical and physical metrology needs to be developed in parallel, to ensure their safe and effective application. The solutions to many health R&D challenges require cross-disciplinary research that is best delivered through collaboration between the National Metrology Institutes and external stakeholders such as regulators, clinicians, healthcare providers and related industries (bio/pharmaceuticals, in vitro diagnostics, advanced therapies medical products and medical technologies).
At the beginning of 2018, the European Metrology Programme for Innovation and Research (EMPIR) will open a call on Health. The budget allocated by the EU for this call is 21 M€, to be distributed among a number of selected Joint Research Projects of the size of 2 M€ each. For each funded project, a targeted 35 % funding is expected for non-metrology institutes and other project partners contributing in realising the project goals.
VSL, as the National Metrology Institute of the Netherlands, organises a workshop with the goal of bringing together the experts in the field of medical care R&D. The workshop will consist of presentations on the added value of metrology in healthcare and discussion sessions to explore new directions. The output of this workshop will be used to identify potential research topics and research consortia.
