World Sepsis Day Event: Metrology for rapid and accurate management of sepsis

14 September 2021, 08:30 – 16:00 CEST (09:30 – 17:00 BST) online

The project

The overall aim of EMPIR project Metrology to enable rapid and accurate clinical measurements in acute management of sepsis (18HLT03, SEPTIMET) is to improve the speed, accuracy and reproducibility of diagnostic tests for the identification and treatment of sepsis.

Sepsis is a life-threatening infection where time to diagnosis is critical to patient outcome. This clinically driven project will develop and characterise reference systems to support the confident application of existing tests, in addition to investigating metrological support for new and innovative approaches that offer the next generation of diagnostic solutions.

Importantly, the outcomes of the project will also support IVD (in-vitro diagnostic) manufacturers, aiming to develop fast tests to support sepsis treatment and to meet the latest requirements of EU diagnostic regulation.

The consortium delivering SEPTIMET brings together twelve partners from seven countries; six National Measurements Institutes/Designated Institutes (LGC, LNE, METAS, NIB, NPL, PTB), four hospitals (APHP, GOSH, MUW, RSCH), one university (BGU) and one research institute (CEA).

The event

Session 1: ‘Identification of sepsis’ will address topics including:

  • Can procalcitonin (PCT) be an effective biomarker for diagnosing sepsis?
  • How can a primary reference measurement procedure be used to ensure traceable measurements for PCT?
  • Can a panel of sepsis biomarkers be more specific and accurate for diagnosing sepsis?

Session 2: ‘Identification of the aetiological cause of sepsis’ will address topics including:

  • How can the current approaches for the detection of the causative agents of sepsis be supported by a metrological and quality assurance framework?
  • What are the new and emerging methods for identifying the cause of sepsis?
  • How can these methods be applied and how can improved reference methods support these tests?
  • What considerations need to be taken into account when applying these methods?

Registration

Participants may register for either session or for the full day. To enable Q&A and interactive discussion between speakers and participants, spaces for both days are limited. Please register interest using the below link, providing information on job role, type of organisation and interest in the topic of the event. In the event of oversubscription, this information will be used to ensure different types of scientific roles and organisations are sufficiently represented.
