EMN Radiation Protection published its Strategic Research Agenda
The Strategic Research Agenda (SRA) for the European radiation protection metrology defines the long-term vision and research priorities of the European Metrology Network (EMN) for Radiation Protection.
"When we founded the EMN for Radiation Protection, we had no idea how much the challenges in radiation protection would change: The changing security situation in the world gives radiation protection a topicality that we could not have imagined in 2019. But it's good to be prepared. Our SRA ensures that we support radiation protection with metrology and that radiation protection is fit for the future",
states Annette Röttger, Chair of EMN Radiation Protection.
The SRA provides two roadmaps for strengthening scientific and technical capabilities in metrology that support radiation protection across Europe:
- Roadmap 1: Metrological needs under Council Directive 2013/59/EURATOM
- Roadmap 2: Metrological needs of the EURATOM Treaty
Key elements of the SRA include:
- Identification of research needs in dosimetry, radioactivity, environmental monitoring, and neutron metrology
- Development of roadmaps linking scientific progress with regulatory and societal requirements
- Incorporation of input from stakeholders including regulators, research institutions, and industry
- Alignment with European initiatives such as Horizon Europe and Euratom programmes
Teemu Siiskonen, Vice-Chair of EMN Radiation Protection comments:
"Europe is strong when Europe is united. Metrology can achieve this because we know the needs of our stakeholders in radiation protection and are able to react quickly with the Metrology Partnership and to shape the future research needs with our stakeholders. For this, we must recognise and thank the European member states and the European Commission, whose support for European metrology research helps in a very practical way: we solve the technological challenges quickly. This helps Europe, the member states and radiation protection."
The SRA was now published on the EMN Radiation Protection website, underlining its scientific and strategic importance. The SRA was also published in The European Physical Journal: https://doi.org/10.1140/epjp/s13360-025-06898-6.
It will serve as a reference document for shaping projects, securing funding, and guiding EMN Radiation Protection’s future research direction.
