The EURAMET family grew in May this year when Moldova gained full membership after all current members voted unanimously for this status.

Moldova has been an associate member of EURAMET since 2017, the same period it was accepted as an associated member of the European Cooperation in Legal Metrology (WELMEC). Over the last two years it has been transferring to EURAMET all its future activities related to the mutual recognition of national measurement standards and calibration certificates issued by National Metrology Institutes (CIPM MRA). This was completed in July this year and acknowledged by the Director of the International Bureau for Weights and Measures (BIPM), Dr. Martin J.T. Milton in a letter to the Director of the National Metrology Institute of the Republic of Moldova (INM-MD) Mr Anatolie Melenciuc.

Regarding this Mr. Melenciuc, said:

“With the Republic of Moldova signing in 2014 the Association Agreement with the European Union and expressing its intention of following the European pathway, it became very clear that the National Metrology System should also be aligned to the European one. Thus, it was only a matter of time and sustainable efforts until INM-MD would become a full member of EURAMET. We are conscious of the fact that this is not only a benefit for the Republic of Moldova, but also a responsibility, and shall do our best to integrate in the EURAMET activities and bring our contribution to the development of the European metrology.”

A milestone for Moldova’s NMI on their way to become full member was when they successfully presented their quality management system to the EURAMET TC-Quality in April.

INM-MD is currently participating in the work of seven technical committees (Quality, Thermometry, Ionising Radiation, Mass and Related Quantities, Photometry and Radiometry, Flow, Length), as well as in the work of the BoD Working Group on Capacity Building, and since 2017 it has already been active in three EMPIR projects relating to research potential:

  • Research capabilities for radiation protection dosimeters, 17RPT01, DOSEtrace
  • Establishing traceability for liquid density measurements, 17RPT02, rhoLiq
  • Traceable measurement capabilities for monitoring thermocouple performance, 18RPT03, MetForTC

EURAMET would like to welcome Moldova and looks forward to the contributions that this NMI will make in the future towards our shared goals.

EMPIR projects are co-funded by the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the EMPIR Participating States.
