Training course on infrared thermometry
Project Description
In the framework of Project 411 entitled "Traceability in infrared radiation thermometry from - 50 °C to 800 °C" local scales will be compared by the circulation of two transfer radiation thermometers in each of two different temperature ranges.
The start of the intercomparison will be preceded by a two-day meeting at IMGC. Taking this opportunity, a two-day course will be added to the meeting. The course will be propedeutical to the planned intercomparison in the medium temperature range from 150 °C to 800 °C.
In this sense, it will be mainly devoted to the practical demonstration of the use of a transfer radiation thermometer and of a transportable zinc-point blackbody that have been developed at IMGC and that will be used in the intercomparison. General methods for the characterization of infrared thermometers will be also discussed.

The training course was originally conceived as propedeutical to the comparison of local scales from 150 °C to 800 °C in the framework of Project 411, an extension of the UE funded TRIRAT project. In this sense, the course was intended to be mainly devoted to the practical demonstration of the use of a transfer radiation thermometer and of a transportable zinc-point blackbody that were developed at IMGC and used in the intercomparison. Such a demonstration took place at IMGC during the meeting attended by the participants in TRIRAT. On the other hand, Project 411 and the TRIRAT project produced interesting results that can be an answer to the points that could have been discussed in a dedicated training course.
In any case, in May 2002 an inquiry among the partners was made with the aim of verifying the actual interest in having now such a course. Very few answers were received and just two partners would be still interested in the course. As things are, there are not the conditions of a sufficient participation to justify the organization of the course and consequently the project 418 may be considered as concluded.
It is worth to note that the just started UE project EVITherM for setting-up a Virtual Institute on Thermal Metrology will be a useful tool for all involved in thermal measurements and activities such as training courses will be organised.
